Chattar Manzil Lucknow


Chattar Manzil was constructed in the year (1798-1814) by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan in the memory of his mother Chhatar Kunwar and was completed by his son Nawab Gazi-ud-Din Haider (1814-1827) and further elaborated and decorated by Nawab Nasir-ud-Din Haider (1827-1837). Presently it is four storied building with two underground basement. It was said that river water is hitting from ground walls which makes building temprature cold. It is Indo-Italian style with a dome Crowned by a Golden pinnacle in the form of an umbrella. Raised from the edge of the of the river to towering height Chhatar Manzil underwent numbers of alteration over the years.


It was housed the Central Drug Research Institute (C.D.R.I.) and is now proposed to be made as a museum on Awadh traditions and heritage. The ‘chhatar’ atop this building forms a part of Lucknow’s official logo. Nawab Saadat Ali Khan bought this grand piece of architecture for Rs 50,000 about a 200 years ago from Claude Martin, a officer of French army and architect.
Building is not meant for public , Saadat Ali Khan commissioned the construction of an elaboration and beautification, which is now Chhatar Manzil. Then, it became the principal residence of the Awadh,s Queen, who are called Begum.

The British acquired the palace and turned it into the United Services Club — stripping much of its former grandeur.After the war of independence in 1857,
After Independence of India, it was taken over by the government of India and on February 17, 1951, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the Council for (CSIR) Scientific and Industrial Research here to start the first drug research laboratory in the country.
Now archaeological department of state is taken into his hand , the doors of Chhatar Manzil and Farhat Baksh Kothi and will be opened to public for the first time in the history.


Chhatar Manzil’s grandeur take precedence over Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Prosperous Qaiserbagh Palace . During the mutiny, Indian soldiers used the palace as a shelter. Now the building is being Constructed by the Uttar Pradesh government for the tourist attraction in Lucknow , basement were also being constructed and will be opened for tourist.
How to reach


The Chhatar Manzil is situated in the heart of the city nearest from Hazrat Ganj, Qaiser Bagh bus stop and also in front of Lucknow High Court bench. Here easy to reach from bus,Taxi ,Auto ,Riksaw, E-rikshaw
